High Transmittance IR-Transparent PC Material for Low-Light Night Vision Goggles

Low-light night vision goggles rely on faint night skylight (starlight, moonlight) and infrared supplementary light to operate in total darkness. Lens caps, outer lenses and viewing windows form the first optical barrier; their material optical performance directly determines imaging clarity and equipment durability. This article introduces high-performance infrared transparent PC modified pellets from Qingdao Zhongxin Huamei Plastics.

Modified with precision optical additives, this PC material delivers stable over 90% transmittance across the 700–2000 nm near-infrared spectrum: 91% transmittance at 850 nm and 93% at the mainstream 940 nm night vision wavelength. It transmits infrared supplementary light signals with minimal loss, enabling image intensifiers to capture reflected infrared light accurately.

Meanwhile, it blocks over 95% visible light (visible transmittance below 5%), effectively filtering stray ambient light to boost image signal-to-noise ratio and eliminate overexposure or ghosting caused by strong light. Customizable R/G/B band transmittance options match optical module designs for various night vision models.

Beyond superior optical properties, the material retains PC’s robust mechanical strength: density 1.102 g/cm³, tensile strength 50 MPa, and notched Izod impact strength 9 kJ/m². It far outperforms glass and PMMA in impact resistance, resisting cracking from bumps or drops—ideal for handheld and helmet-mounted military night vision gear.

With a melt flow rate of 21.5 g/10 min, it ensures smooth injection molding for curved lenses and custom-shaped lens caps. Consistent batch performance raises finished product yield by 5% and cuts rejects from uneven light transmission or color deviation. Temperature resistance and UV anti-aging properties prevent yellowing or transmittance loss during long-term outdoor night use. It serves optical lenses and housings for civilian surveillance, law enforcement and special military night vision devices.
